About this kit

Build an autonomous obstacle-avoiding robot using an ultrasonic sensor mounted on an SG90 servo. When the robot detects something ahead, it stops, scans left and right with the servo, measures the distance each way, and steers toward the clearer path.

What you'll build

4 hands-on builds included with this kit

1
Ultrasonic distance test
Wire the ultrasonic sensor to the Pico and print live distance readings to confirm it's working.
2
Servo scanning mount
Attach the sensor to the SG90 servo and write code to sweep it left and right.
3
Motor driver wiring
Wire all 4 BO motors to the L298N driver for full directional control.
4
Autonomous obstacle avoidance
Combine distance sensing and servo scanning into the full decision loop that steers the robot around obstacles.

What's in the box

12 line items — check everything before you start building

Raspberry Pi Pico
The microcontroller -- runs the MicroPython program that senses and steers.
1
L298N motor driver
Lets the Pico safely switch the higher-current drive motors.
1
Ultrasonic sensor
Measures distance to the nearest object using an ultrasonic echo, like sonar.
1
300 RPM BO motor-straight
Geared DC motors that drive the wheels.
4
65mm robot wheel
Larger wheels for smoother movement.
4
Robot chassis
The frame every component mounts to.
1
Jumper wires
Wire the sensor, servo, and driver board together.
40
18650 Li-ion 2500mAh battery pack
Power source for the motors and electronics.
1
Breadboard
Prototyping surface for the sensor wiring.
1
SG90 servo motor
Rotates the ultrasonic sensor left and right to scan for the clearest path.
1
Data cable (type B)
Connects the Pico to a computer to upload the MicroPython code.
1
Double-sided foam tape
Secures the breadboard and sensor mount to the chassis.
